The Land of the Rising Sun

by Cin on March 17, 2011

The Japanese call their country Nippon, which means “where the sun originates” and which has been interpreted in the West as “The Land of the Rising Sun.”

We have all witnessed this week the dignity and grace of the Japanese people. We have also seen scenes of destruction that are very difficult to witness even at our comfortable distance half a world away. Even now, their fate is uncertain.

But part of being Sunny Anyway is the belief in humanity and our potential to survive and rebuild. To help us hold in our minds the beauty that is Japan, I’ve chosen to share the works of my favorite Japanese artists. Along with this I offer my prayer for recovery and rebirth – and a bright new day for The Land of the Rising Sun.

*sigh*. Thank you for sharing these beautiful images and eloquent thoughts. Of course I grew up with these images, and this is very close to my heart these days. Love you.

You’re so welcome. I’ve always felt such a connection to this art – they inspired the Impressionists and I understand why.

We’re all Japanese in spirit these days.
